Designed in honor of the Nike US Open for Surfing, these two athletic brands collaborated to create limited edition sneakers and swim shorts. Although the combination of runners with swimming gear might seem like an odd combination, they added technology behind the inspiration for the pieces makes them masterpieces in themselves.
Hurley has made even further improvements on the award-winning biomimicry board shorts by engineering the Phantom Fuse to have less bulk and be even lighter. Nike combined their efforts with help from artist James ‘Dalek’ Marshall in the designing of the Run +3 sneaker. The shoes are color coordinated with the Hurley boardshorts.
Biomimicry within the fashion community refers to designers looking at the natural world, and finding ways to incorporate that into their work. The most well known example of biomimicry is velcro, inspired by burrs. Other examples include the Morpho Butterfly, which is able to display and change into different colors.
The Nike Free Run +3 Hurley NRG collection is now available worldwide at selected Nike retailers.
