We live in a world where technology is right at our fingertips, or in this case, ON our fingertips.
Two creative Master of Fine Arts (MFA) students in California have come up with a way to track your every move with a wicked looking manicure. Kristina Ortega and Jenny Rodenhouse designed technological nail art for a project called “Wearable Services” from a Wearable Ecologies course which explores the possibilities and challenges of tech wearables (how awesome is it that schools have classes such as this now?).
Ortega and Rodenhouse proposed pop-up shops with “technology technicians” to embed fingernails with customizable sensors that are bedazzled with jewels and LED lights. The purpose is to provide behavior modification and programmed reminders. For example, a small buzz to the fingertips could be programmed when the user touches a cigarette providing a physical reminder to not smoke.

As a new beauty innovation, tech nail art actually makes a lot of sense. Technological advances are in almost everything we own, so having nails programmed to benefit our every day lives could be quite useful. If they can track what’s going on inside our bodies, display behavior modification or even basic reminders such as sensors going off when you have a meeting or providing you with directions when you get lost. THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS!
I wonder if men would get in on these manicures. What about washing dishes, could that still be a possibility? Not to mention, breaking a nail would be even MORE devastating. Regardless, I hope a project like this has enough support to officially launch. Would love to know your opinion about it. Are you open to try this tech nail art out?
