The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s largest particle accelerator, reopened this week after a two year hiatus for repairs. Beyond the LHC’s incredible scientific value, the machine is also important for fashion’s summer collections.
Iris van Herpen, a designer paving the way for wearable technology, created her S/S 15 ready-to-wear collection with the LHC as her muse. For those of us who skipped a physics class (or 10), the LHC is a large magnetized cylinder that directs two particle beams travelling at the speed of light to collide. Still with me? Van Herpen’s aptly named Magnetic Motion line is meant to bring life to these powerful, but invisible, magnetic forces active in the particle accelerator.
While the line uses complex architectural design, 3D printing, laser cutting and injection moulding among the construction techniques, van Herpen’s line still reads wearable. In fact, some of the pieces could even be described as soft and more feminine.
Though the collection is for spring/summer, the designer has chosen a darker and more neutral colour palette to allow the construction to shine through.
The finale look, seen below, is made from an intricate web of lace and is one of the most bold looks in the collection.
Van Herpen says that the shoes and accessories were “grown” from magnets, thus no two are the same.
