This year’s 2016 MET Gala was right up our alley. Sponsored by Apple, the exhibition titled, Manus x Machina, showcases Fashion in an Age of Technology and explores how fashion designers are reconciling the handmade and the machine-made in the creation of haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear.
Monday’s MET Gala red carpet was once again, a star-studded cast with Beyoncé, Emma Watson, Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Taylor Swift, Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner, Gigi Hadid, and Zayn Malik, all in attendance. From silver feathers gowns to metal armour suits, attire reflected this year’s futuristic theme.
Special recognition goes out to Emma Watson, Margo Robbie and Lupita Nyong’o who all went sustainable with Calvin Klein for the Green Carpet Challenge. Emma’s look was made from Newlife fabric, a unique yarn engineered from used plastic bottles sourced, processed and spun into yarns exclusively in Italy. Every element of the look was considered from an ethical and aesthetic perspective - including the lining crafted from organic silk and cotton, and even down to the zippers which were made from recycled plastic.
