We’ve spoken about how Burberry kills the fashion-tech game before; they continue to adopt new technology and find a way to implement it into their runways and eCommerce. Now Burberry has teamed up with GQ UK to present a three-part series of videos for their mens fragrance, Mr. Burberry.
The first video in the series, called The Departure, stars Game of Thrones’ actress Sophie Turner and is directed by Sara Dunlop, whose film Dreamworks was nominated at Cannes film festival. We gotta say, perfume advertisements can either be really great (shout out to the Miss Dior spots filmed by Sophia Coppola) or really not great, and this one definitely falls in the former.
While wearing a gorgeous Burberry evening gown, Sophie chats with her friend about the night before, one that she very clearly spent with a gentlemen caller. He’s gone in the morning, something she’s not typically used to since she usually does the leaving, and she recounts the night over the phone to her companion. How he dared her to steal a rock after the award show they both attended, how the shining moon in the sky, and how he was ‘just an original’. She insists to her friend on the other line that she was not upset and that she will be okay, but the wistful way she recalls their first kiss suggests otherwise.
At the end of the video, she discovers that he’s left his suit jacket hanging up in her closet (how very formal for a one night stand) and the screen goes black.
What will happen with Sophie and her mystery man next is something we’ll never know. The next part of the series is set to star Josephine de la Baume on her own adventures, with the last part starring Sai Bennett. Is Mr. Burberry going to have a rendevous with each of these ladies? Will he leave his designer digs back at all of their hotel rooms? That’s something we’ll definitely find out.
Though we gotta say Sophie; you said he has a way of insulting you and complimenting you at the same time? You’re probably better off then, cause frankly, that’s never cute.
But what is cute is this series of videos. A video campaign, when done right, has a way of captivating an audience in watching something they don’t even realize is an advertisement. It seems much more realistic and like simple entertainment content. It’s enjoyable to see Sophie traipse around her hotel room, picking up her Burberry trench and lamenting on a love that ended before it could even start.
Needless to say, we’re hooked and we’re going to be coming back for more. You’ve done it again, Burberry. We couldn’t resist if we tried. Just like Miss Turner and Mr. Burberry
