H&M is starting 2020 off with a new sustainable collection set to be released in March 2020 which uses leather made from wine waste.
The retail giant is continuing its sustainability mission with a new conscious collection using vegan leather made from wine. Who would have thought that a millennial spirit favorite, like wine, would create a path to a circular economy in fashion? It is safe to say we STAN! H&M has diligently been creating its space in the eco-conscious fashion sector, from World Recycle Day to its various Conscious Collections including the upcycled Jeanious collection using recycled textiles like Econyl and PET - they are not missing a beat.
This newest addition to the Conscious Collection is a collaborative effort with Italian biomaterial startup Vegea. The capsule includes handbags and footwear using bio-vegan soft leather made from byproducts of wine, as well as, a new dyeing process for fabrics using waste coffee grounds and recycled polyester. H&M is taking recycling to new heights and H&M sustainability manager Pascal Brun is ensuring it remains that way.
This was confirmed in a recent interview with Vogue saying, “Going forward, we need to be using more bio-based materials and more waste in our collections.” He added that sustainability is a commitment that will reach further into the design process and encourage customers to “have more sustainable behavior.”
Needless to say, we can expect more fashion that is environmentally-friendly from H&M going forward and we hope to see other fast fashion giants follow suit. At the end of the day, we want fashion we can feel good about wearing that doesn’t hurt our environment, workers and our pockets.
