Google Pays Tribute to Legendary Costume Designer: Edith Head

By Contributor on October 28, 2013

To celebrate Edith Head’s birthday, Google gives her the highest honour by showcasing six of her iconic looks as today’s Google doodle.

Edith Head designed the costumes for many Hollywood films, some of the stars she dressed included Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday and Funny Face, Elizabeth Taylor in A Place in the Sun, and Tippi Hedren in The Birds.

Edith still holds the record for the most Oscars for Best Costume Design wins. She won most of these Oscars during the early ‘50s, but it was her work on the Alfred Hitchcock films that put her on the map, as one of the leading costume designers in Hollywood.

It’s safe to say that Head played an influential role in Hollywood glamour during the mid-30s, she created a widely copied sarong for Dorothy Lamour in Jungle Princess, as was the strapless evening gown Elizabeth Taylor wore in A Place in the Sun.

Edith died in 1981 at the age of 83, but left a legacy and a glamourous mark on Hollywood fashion. Today would have been the costume designer’s 116th birthday.
