The famous catwalks, the backstage mayhem and the hottest street style, the month of fashion madness is what we live for. But is it time for a change?
There’s no denying social media’s role in disrupting the fashion world. We’re seeing more and more designers changing their collections and shows making them more inclusive and interactive than ever. But, what about forgoing fashion week altogether?
That’s what Wes Gordon did and so far, it’s paid off.
Wes Gordon is an Atlanta, Georgia-raised designer established in NYC. He launched his ready-to-wear women’s line in 2009 after graduating from Central Saint Martins University of Art and Design in London (notable alumni include Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney, no big deal). He’s since grown his brand and dressed the likes of Kerry Washington, Jessica Alba and Michelle Obama.
His designs feature modern pieces with the right amount of polish. Picture minimalistic garments, clean lines and romanticized details (swoon!). Inspired by 90s simplicity, his no-fuss elegance appeals to the Upper East Side woman.
Aside from his dream-worthy collection, Gordon caused major buzz among millennials this NYFW when he launched his Fall 2016 collection exclusively on Instagram. His collection was presented through nine 15-second vignettes with each posts linking directly to preorder on Moda Operandi.
Equipped with a team of photographers, stylists and two models, Gordon hit the NY streets guerrilla-style. The cold and hardness of the city perfectly complemented the romantic and nostalgic look of the collection.
Besides being a new way to release a collection, Gordon gave context to his pieces and a way to for consumers to see how they can work for everyday life.
He didn’t only manage to make a statement about the forwardness of his brand, but also about the state of the industry as a whole. Let’s see if other designers follow suit and go for the double tap.
