Stella McCartney joins forces with revolutionary textiles company, Bolt Threads in its next phase of creating sustainable fashion.
When we covered Bolt Threads at FASHIONOTES earlier this year, they were releasing their first ever product, a spider silk tie. This season, they’ve announced a dream partnership with pioneering sustainable fashion house, Stella McCartney.
The partnership began with the New York Museum of Modern Art’s “Items: Is Fashion Modern?” exhibition, whereby McCartney and Bolt Threads’ teams collaborated to create a one-of-a-kind golden dress made entirely out of bio-fabricated material. It’s a yarn made by the power of science. It is manufactured in a lab with a genetically engineered yeast protein and spun into fiber strands.
For Spring/Summer 2018, McCartney designed two garments featuring the innovative textile, a brown knit bodysuit and a brown knitted parachute pant. “On a personal and professional level partnering with Bolt Threads is so exciting, because it feels like everything is finally coming together and the dots are being connected between fashion, sustainability and tech innovation,” says McCartney of the collaboration.
“This is something that I’ve been personally on a journey to find for much of my career and I just feel like there is finally a new opportunity to bring so many industries together and for them to all work as one for a better planet. It is a truly modern and mindful approach to fashion. The industry has so much heritage, but at times it can be damaging to the environment and it can also drag you in a backwards direction and for me I always want to move forward in fashion and this is truly a moment to celebrate technology and the future of fashion.”
Bolt Threads’ CEO, Dan Widmaier speaks of the dream collabo, “From the day we founded Bolt Threads, we’ve dreamt of partnering with Stella McCartney. Not only does she have an unparalleled aesthetic, but her values and pioneering sustainable fashion align perfectly with our vision for the future of fashion.”
Together, they created a spiderless spidersilk material using yeast, also making the textile vegan-friendly and staying true to the designer’s animal-free philosophy. The process reduces pollution, creates long-term sustainability, and always remains cruelty-free. No doubt, Bolt Threads and Stella McCartney will pave the way for eco-conscious and luxury fabric innovation. Explore the collaboration and get ready to see more from this dynamic duo.
