This 2017 MET Gala was based in the artful world of Rei Kawakubo celebrating her exhibit, Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between
One of the most anticipated art and fashion events of the year, it was a star studded evening with plenty of viral-worthy moments.
An exceptionally exciting exhibition, one of the most reclusive and visionary designers of our time, Rei Kawakubo had her Comme des Garçons masterpieces on display. It was a strong departure from the gala’s futuristic theme last year, Manus x Machina.
Kawakubo’s collections spanning from 1997 to her most recent Fall 2016 presentation made up the breath-taking exhibit. Standout pieces included gingham dresses padded with misshapen lumps, distressed bridal gowns with a lived in feel, skirts turned inside out, a silky red torso bulb with no arm holes, and the current collection’s reimagined florals in unexpected voluminous shapes.
As per every MET gala, the night was flush with fashion’s most talked about models, designers, and celebrities. The red carpet boasted luxuriously extravagant looks including sustainable designs from H&M, Stella McCartney, and Vivienne Westwood.
A few of our favorite models: Joan Smalls, Jourdan Dunn, Kendall Jenner and Ashley Graham donned stunning gowns in the true spirit of avant garde.
H&M collaborated with a star-studded cast including a sustainable pieces using organic silk, also known as Tencel, for Nicki Minaj, Future, Ashley Graham, Joe Jonas, Jourdan Dunn, Sasha Lane and Stella Maxwell. With inspiration from the exhibit, H&M leveraged Kawakubo’s themes of deconstruction and asymmetry paired with their sustainable fashion initiative.
Designers Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein, Vivienne Westwood, Julia Haart, Stella McCartney, Tommy Hilfiger, Versace and Coach all presented beautiful gowns inspired by Comme de Garçons on the red carpet. Notable looks came from the Queen of The Met gala, Rihanna in a stunning Comme des Garçons floral masterpiece, Gigi Hadid in a gorgeous structural nude jacket gown, Kate Hudson in an all white modern look by Stella McCartney, and Zendaya in an artfully decadent tropical gown by D&G.
No doubt the star of the show was the Comme de Garçons exhibit, but funny enough, the public restroom at The Met was another type of exhibition in an of itself. The viral mirror groupie shot which included Paris Jackson, Lukka Sabbat, Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, and ASAP Rocky to name a few hit over 50,000 likes on Kylie Jenner’s Instagram in minutes.
The Art In Between exhibit is now open to the public at The MET and it’s a must see — a true artistic experience.
